Plans for the World Walks for Water and Sanitation in Ghana and Sierra Leone!
Friday, 2nd March 2012, 02:18pm

Natasha Horsfield is End Water Poverty’s Campaigns Intern. Here, she talks about two of End Water Poverty’s members’ exciting plans for the World Walks for Water and Sanitation 2012 in Ghana and Sierra Leone! In Sierra Leone, 1,500 people will be walking on the 22nd March in not one but three 10 KM walks organised by WASH-Net Sierra Leone, two in Freetown and one in Makeni! Musa Ansumana Soko from WASH-Net says the importance of the election year in Sierra Leone means that various political parties will be taking part in the walks to show support for the WASH manifesto and statement. The two walks in Freetown will finish at one final meeting point where a statement on water and sanitation will be read out. The statement has also been sent to key ministers prior to the walks.
In Ghana, Seeds 4 African Relief Agency (SARA) are organising a 3 ½KM walk

in Tivi, where at least 150 people will be walking as well as doing a local clean up as part of the walk. They have invited the finance minister and former president of Ghana to attend and are also hoping that the Asamoah foundation and possibly Asamoah Gyan himself (who is already supporting the World Walks for Water and Sanitation campaign) will be able to join them on their walk!
David Pinto from SARA wants to use the walk to raise awareness for water and sanitation issues but also to tell ministers to keep their promises for constructing boreholes in rural communities, including in the community of Tivi where SARA hopes to secure the promise of at least 3 boreholes as a result of the walk.
